When I look back at over 20 years as a health professional, I often wonder if I gave my clients, patients or athletes the best of what I know today NOW?
Of course, we learn as we live and as with many ways of assessing clients, I review and test many different outcomes from the tests I have conducted either as the initial tests, formative, end of a program or just a general ‘snapshot’ of a person’s health. Once I have a subjective assessment, we can then work together to use these measurements as an outcome or as titled in the fitness industry, ‘goals’. There are literally 100’s of tests to use and each one has its place, but I find it hard to go past the BioAge testing system. BioAge is an extensive health assessment tool using a series of metabolic, physical and behavioural evaluations. As you read through the rationale, the process by which assessment is conducted and results generated for you or the client to work from, you will see why I use this as one of the most successful ways to improve my/your client’s health – by adding life to their years.
By taking traditional health and fitness information and presenting it in a manner that is meaningful to the client, engagement in behaviour change process becomes more likely – and when combined with behaviour change education and tools, the chances of a successful outcome are increased significantly.
The result from this test engages the brain to sit up and take notice to provide an emotional connection.

Bio Age Testing
The human body has two different ages: a chronological age and a biological age. Chronological age refers to the actual time a human has been alive, while biological age refers to how old that human seems. The Bio Age test involves inputting data from my client’s: Gender, Age, Ethnicity and taking Physical, Behavioural and Metabolic Tests to get the most accurate assessment of their overall health. Tests – Standard
Blood pressure is the force of the blood pushing against the artery walls. It is greatest when the heart contracts (systolic pressure) and lowest when the heart is resting briefly between beats (diastolic pressure). Ensure client is well rested and relaxed. Provide your BP score to the trainer. If you are on BP medication, then enter 140/90.
For female waist measurement, use the narrowest point between the top of pelvis and ribs, for males use umbilicus. BioAge generates one result from both BMI and waist values. Emphasise clinical relevance (i.e. disease risk prediction) of this test to the client. Provide your waist girth (cm) to the trainer.
Body Composition (BMI)
Body Mass Index (a measure of your body density) and waist circumference (which gives an indication of abdominal fat), gives the best indication of risk for a host of serious chronic diseases, including Heart Disease, Stroke Cancer and Diabetes. BMI is automatically calculated from client details.
VO2max is the standard measure of cardiovascular fitness. It is the maximum amount of oxygen that the body can use during exercise. The test performed is the ‘Beep Test. Go here for 20m Multistage Fitness Test (Beep Test) Instructions.
Provide your level and shuttle score. They will then convert this to VO2 max using the Beep Test Score Calculator
The Overhead Squat is a very good ‘functional assessment’ in that it is an important movement for assessing mobility and stability of the entire body. To perform the assessment well, you need a full range of motion at all your major joints, as well as enough core stability to coordinate and perform the movement effectively.
Provide the number of faults – if any.
The purpose of the lungs is to supply the muscles and tissues of the body with oxygen and to remove carbon dioxide and associated waste products. Ageing and damage from pollutants cause our lungs to lose their elasticity and become less efficient. Perform 3 tests – record the best score.
Provide the number
Push-ups are a universally accepted test for upper body muscle strength and endurance, and we know that having muscles with good strength and endurance is important for the overall physical function later in life. Males perform full push-ups on toes. Females perform modified version on knees. Do as many as you can without stopping. If momentum is lost, the test stops.
Provide the number of repetitions (reps)
The core muscles are important for the stability of the spine. As these are postural muscles, they are designed to be active for long periods in order to support the spine. Client assumes plank/prone hold position. Ensure body remains straight throughout. Stop test if client experiences back pain or deviates significantly from straight body position and enter time achieved.
Provide the total duration (sec)
Smoking (per day)
The problems of smoking are increased if you have an unhealthy diet or have an inactive lifestyle, as both of these situations reduce the ability of the body to protect itself. If you have quit smoking in last 6 months, 1 is entered.
Provide the number of cigarettes (per day) if any.
The recommended alcohol intake differs per country, but a reasonable guide for men is:
• No more than 4 standard drinks* per day and no more than 20 standard drinks per week.
A reasonable alcohol intake for women is:
• No more than 2 standard drinks* per day and no more than 14 standard drinks per week.
Provide the number of standard drinks (per week), if any.
Most people have heard the saying, ‘you are what you eat’. If you want to be in optimal health, you need to eat a healthy balanced diet that contains adequate amounts of nutrients. Results from the questionnaire will provide direction on your current nutrition intake. Provide the total (number) you scored out of 100
The ‘Miller-Smith Lifestyle Assessment Inventory’ questionnaire, is a simple and accurate way of measuring stress by judging your responses to certain situations over the last few months. This test aims to determine the amount of stress resulting from your lifestyle. There are no right or wrong answers, but the more honest you are, the more useful the test is. Rate their answers to the 12 statements according to the following scale; Always = 1, Often = 2, Sometimes = 3, Almost Never = 4. Write down the number and total up at the end. Results are from one of three sectors (low, average, high and extreme vulnerability).
Provide the total (number) you scored out of 48 to the trainer.
BioAge Standard Report
Once ALL measurements and scores are taken, the trainer will enter these results taken from the form, into the backend portal. Using normative scores, generated from comparisons of other people of the same gender and age, you will receive a FULL REPORT including a comparison of your Chronological Versus your Biological Age. This version of the BioAge is designed to assess your BioAge by comparing your results on selected tests against normative values for certain subsets of the population. It also includes an assessment of Blood pressure and body composition and some tips for improving these results where applicable. This advice is designed to be used in consultation with your primary health-care provider.
The report will be emailed and used in conjunction with the coach with other measurements to determine subjective (i.e. measurable) goals for the program.
Case Study #1
One of my clients is a 38-year-old man. At the start of the Fitter After Forty 30-day program, he produced the Biological age of 40.50 years, based on each test that was conducted. Armed with this initial test, my client went about making significant changes to his lifestyle including; getting back into eating a healthy breakfast and being mindful of what he put in his mouth as well as making the verbal commitment with me, to train 6-days a week for 10-30 minutes each session. Following the initial test, the man proceeded to follow the exercise and nutrition program for the next 30-days, while also providing weekly LeanScreen assessments to keep tabs on his progress. After 30-days, I did a follow-up assessment to determine just how many years he had gained in only 30-days.
As you can clearly see, my 38-year-old client gained 8.5 years based on doing the same tests and being tested under the same conditions he did 30-days apart. His version of the testing and remarkable short-journey is captured here in this short video.
Once it (the number) is connected, the brain can then be lead on a behaviour change journey to a greater self-determination. Momentum is achieved through goal setting (which I do with my client) and regular feedback to build self-efficacy.
